The broken window effect is one of our favourite references when discussing a childcare or education setting with a manager or owner who wants to transform their space.
It's so relatable and easily applied to most settings. It's a really simple theory, based on criminology, where signs of disorder and misbehavior lead to further crimes.
This is not to say that your toddlers and young people are becoming hard criminals.... but thinking about your settings that house your small people; where mess, scuffed walls or disorganised chaos, leads to more of the same.
Sound familiar?
Not to mention whenever you've visited a 'bad' neighbourhood, with the obvious signs of crime; litter, graffiti, possibly actual broken windows. As you drive through, you're thinking "lock the doors, hide your valuables...." let alone leave your most precious asset in their care for the day. Well, that's the reality of prospective parents or Ofsted visiting your setting and seeing all of your 'broken windows'.
We know it's challenging to be able to see past your setting with 'fresh eyes' once you've spent day in, day out there for however many months or years, and that's why our expert team provide an auditing service to assess the possibility within your setting.
Wanting to change your staff culture to take pride in their setting and strive for the highest standards isn't a quick fix, but investing into your 'broken windows' would certainly put you on the right track.
